Structural changes in anatase TiO$$_{2}$$ thin films irradiated with high-energy heavy ions

Electronic excitation effects on TiO$$_{2}$$ thin films with anatase structure irradiated with 230MeV Xe ions have been studied by means of X-ray diffraction method. X-ray diffraction intensity shows exponential decrease as a function of ion-fluence, indicating that tracks having about 10nm diameter are introduced by the irradiation. Rutile structured TiO$$_{2}$$ was also irradiated and exhibited different damage behavior from that of anatase one. We demonstrated that X-ray diffraction meathod is one of the powerful tool to investigate track structure.

High-temperature reaction of B$$_{4}$$C with (Pu,U)O$$_{2}$$

Otobe, Haruyoshi; Hayashi, Hirokazu; Takano, Masahide

no journal, ,

The high-temperature reaction of B$$_{4}$$C with U$$_{0.93}$$Pu$$_{0.07}$$O$$_{2}$$ has been investigated. The samples were prepared by mixing B$$_{4}$$C and U$$_{0.93}$$Pu$$_{0.07}$$O$$_{2}$$ powders for the molar ratio of 1 to 1 and 1 to 4 and pressing them into disks. The samples heated at 1333 or 1473 K in Ar gas were identified to be the fluorite-type phases like UO$$_{2}$$ by the powder X-ray diffraction method, independently of the molar ratio of B$$_{4}$$C to U$$_{0.93}$$Pu$$_{0.07}$$O$$_{2}$$ and the heating temperature. The formation of PuBO$$_{3}$$ was not discernable in the X-ray diffraction patterns. The samples heated at 1473 K in He-4%H$$_{2}$$ gas were also the fluorite-type phases, independently of the molar ratio of B$$_{4}$$C to U$$_{0.93}$$Pu$$_{0.07}$$O$$_{2}$$ (1 to 1 or 1 to 4). On the other hand, the samples heated at 1333 K in He-4%H$$_{2}$$ gas were composed of not only fluorite-type phases but also B$$_{4}$$C phases.
